Even though school is out for a much-needed summer vacation, you can still learn something new! Discover elements of Kokomo’s history as you explore our community’s historical sites and local hot spots.
Art on Fire
Have you ever wondered how beautiful art glass is made? Experience the unique process with a behind-the-scenes tour at Kokomo Opalescent Glass, where glass is hand-ladled, mixed and rolled from a 2,500-degree furnace. Producing beautiful glass since 1888, Kokomo Opalescent Glass is the oldest art glass company in the United States! Factory tours are available Monday through Saturday at 11 a.m. and closed-toe and closed-heel shoes must be worn at all times. After your tour, stop by the OP Shop to take home a Kokomo-made souvenir.
Museum Tours
Local history can be found in the elegant Seiberling Mansion, which is home to the Howard County Museum. As you take a step back into the past, don’t forget to admire the late Victorian architecture, hand-carved woodwork, and stunning stained glass windows … made with Kokomo Opalescent Glass! Insiders tip: Visit the Seiberling Mansion during Mr. Kingston’s Historic Car Show on July 25 and 26, 2025 for a unique display of vintage cars! You can also find more of Kokomo’s history in the Elwood Haynes Museum located in the historic home of automotive pioneer and inventor Elwood Haynes.
History outdoors
The Industrial Heritage Trail and Walk of Excellence weave through beautiful downtown Kokomo with historic stops along the way including the Depot District. Grab a bicycle or your favorite pair of walking shoes and hit the trails to see a variety of historic buildings and local landmarks!
Dining with a side of history
Many of Kokomo’s restaurants and bakeries have made their mark in our local history. Savor local favorites at Dan’s Variety Bakery, Martino’s Italian Villa, Moore’s Pie Shop, Artie’s Tenderloin, Louie’s Coney Island, Ray’s Drive-In, and Cone Palace and discover why they have stood the test of time! You can also enjoy a meal at Brick St. Deli, Marble The Steakhouse, Cook McDoogal’s Irish Pub, and The Foxes Trail, which are all located in historic buildings, or find elements of Kokomo’s history at Half Moon Restaurant and Brewery and Grindstone Charley’s.
